Product stewardship for all moderate risk waste

Household hazardous waste (HHW) includes such products as cleaning fluids, varnish, paint remover, rust removers, pesticides, gasoline and fuel. These products require special handling once consumers no longer need them.

While the Haz Waste Program operates permanent facilities that collect HHW and moderate risk waste (MRW) year-round, the Policy Program is exploring ways to establish a stewardship program to increase the availability of collection service and shift the responsibility for collection and transportation to the manufacturers of these products. Oregon and Vermont introduced similar bills in 2019 and 2020, and similar programs are in operation in Canada.
